Assumption Dec 1, 2014, 10:26a - Life
There are certain assumptions one tends to make in life. The assumption that you will someday have kids. Or the assumption that you won't have kids (right now, or ever). The assumption that you'll find a job. The assumption that you will die before your children do. The assumption that you'll find someone to share some (or the rest) of your life with. The assumption that you won't go blind, or lose your hearing. The assumption that you'll be able to retire. Or the assumption that you won't have to go to war.
The assumption that you'll wake up tomorrow. The assumption that you are in control of your life. The assumption that the subway will work. The assumption that there won't be any traffic. The assumption that your car will work. The assumption that your dog won't run away. The assumption that your house is safe. That you won't get mugged walking in your own neighborhood. The assumption that your plane will not be the one that crashes (or gets shot down).
Just by statistics, one day, one of your assumptions will be wrong. If it's something small, OK, you roll with it. But if it's something big, what then? Do you start to think about your other assumptions? Do you begin to wonder whether you should let these assumptions persist, carving out those invisible girders on which your present life and future life both sit? Or should you let them go, let gravity pull all the pieces down to their natural states, so you can examine them as they actually are, detoxified of assumption?
