Share the Carpool
Jun 6, 2006, 10:39p

Yes, it's time for another carpool idea - these ideas are about the only good that comes from me commuting 2-3 hours per day.

Today, I was driving to SF on the 101 at around 6:30p. Of course, there's bumper-to-bumper traffic, and of course, the carpool lane is flying by. Then, out of nowhere, I see a car with 4 people inside of it. I was dumbfounded - why would there be 4 people in a car, when all you need is 2 to ride in the carpool lane - clearly, I don't think of driving as anything but a commuting activity :).

And that's what inspired this brilliant idea: we need a device that allows people to share the carpool. Excess individuals should be able to move between cars so that more cars can partake in the carpool love. All I need is 1 more person - all the guy has to do is get into my car somehow. We could both slow down and sidle up right next to each other, and then the guy could make the leap - I bet it would be fun. Then, when his friends were getting off, he could jump back to his friend's car, and I'd pop out of the carpool lane.

We could build a bridge between cars, just like the ramp that pops out of the back of the U-Haul that makes loading easier, so that the other person can crawl on over. And of course, we'd be nowhere if we weren't capitalists, so I wouldn't mind paying the guy a few bucks for risking his life.

Or, we could just let people jump from roof to roof. At least it would be entertaining when everyone is sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

That's it. It's simple. This could be *huge*. Let's do it.

good idea. there's something similar already out there. you can pick up someone (a random) at a pick-up site in, say, berkeley, and ferry them with you to sf.
